Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is a popular spreadsheet program that was developed by Microsoft. It is designed for computers that use the Windows operating system, and it can also be used on computers that use Mac OS as well. It has an easy to use interface with a number of tools that can make creating a spreadsheet fast and simple. This combined with a powerful marketing campaign has made Excel one of the most popular software programs in the world. Excel is typically bundled in the Microsoft Office package of programs.

Excel is not the first spreadsheet program to be produced by Microsoft. A spreadsheet program called Multiplan was first released by the company in 1982, but it eventually lost market share due to the release of Lotus 1-2-3. Because of this, Microsoft decided to create a spreadsheet program that could effectively compete against the dominance of Lotus. The very first version of Excel was introduced in 1985, and was available on the Mac. The first version for Windows would be released two years later. Because Lotus didn't bring their spreadsheet program to Windows quickly enough, Excel begin to gain a larger share of the market. By 1988 Excel had surpassed 1-2-3, and it is one of the factors behind the success of Microsoft as a software company.

The latest version of the software is Excel 11, and it is part of the Microsoft Office 2003 bundle. An Excel file will come in the form of .xls. A number of changes can be made to the interface of the program, but the GUI will always be composed of rows and cells. Information can be placed in cells which will have an effect on the data that may be present in other cells. In addition to this, Excel gives the user a large amount of control over the look of cells and the information that is placed in them. Both Microsoft Word and PowerPoint were designed to conform to Excel.

The introduction of Visual Basic with Excel allowed a number of tasks to be automated. Since 1993, Visual Basic has become an integral part of Excel, along with the introduction of the integrated development environment. However, the automated properties of Excel with Visual Basic has caused a number of macro viruses to be created, though many of them are now blocked by standard antivirus programs. Microsoft also allows users to disable the use of macros if they choose to, and this has largely eliminated the problem.

While Microsoft Excel was not well known during the late 1980s, it has now become the most widely spreadsheet software, though it is facing competition from a number of companies, most notably Google. Despite this, Microsoft has made a name for itself with the release of Excel, and next to Windows, it is one of the most well known software packages in the world. It has excellent calculation tools, and it can effectively be used for graphing as well. However, the software wouldn't have the dominance that it has today if it hadn't been for Multiplan, the predecessor that started it all.

How to choose programmers while outsourcing

The work of a programmer involves high responsibilities so they should be capable enough to handle and execute all programming work allotted to them. The programmers should have expertise in Programming/Software, network designing and administration, technical support, technical writing, engineering etc. The programmers must have technical expertise in Microsoft Technologies like C, VB.Net and ASP.Net and Java Technologies. Apart from these, the hired programmers should possess the application expertise in Web and Portal development, Client server and other applications. Also, domain expertise in CMS, CRM, ERP, MIS, Community Portal and Call Centre Software is the principle capability for the programmers as this qualification not only involves technical know-how but also to retain and apply professional knowledge and ability to understand the business. The programmers should possess the knowledge and experience of back-office support or human resources.

Choosing the programmers in India is not an issue for the overseas companies wanting to setup offshore outsourcing establishment in India. India produces thousands of IT professionals and computer experts with MBA every year. In fact, there has been a tremendous demand for the IT professionals in India as well as in foreign countries like USA, UK, Australia, Canada and in European countries. Being qualified from the best institutes, the outsourcing professionals in India not only expertise in computer programming work, but they also possess the great leadership and management skills so are capable enough to build strong relationships with the clients as well as with the top management of the principal companies.

In order to get the best out of programmers, the overseas companies should choose those with classic experience. In case of e-commerce development, the companies must choose the programmers experienced in transactional website development process with database driven website creation experience. Over and above all, the programmers should be creative, open-minded and capable enough to add creativity to make the project better. The programmers should possess good communication skill with consistency in understanding client requirements and apart from technical solutions, the programmers should apply their technical, analytical and creative skills to come up with business-oriented solutions. When choosing dedicated programmers, main thing the outsourcing companies must look for is the standard and quality of work the programmers would execute.

Is Visual Basic 6 Dead?

Is Visual Basic 6 Dead?
By Michel Latreille

No way!

To paraphrase Mark Twain, the famous American writer: "Reports of the death of VB 6 have been greatly exaggerated!"

These days, VB.NET is said to be all the rage in application development circles. But is it really? Don't get me wrong. Visual Studio 2005, which contains VB.NET, is a great product. It is now really object-oriented and that makes it a powerful development tool for all kinds of major projects.

But, some of the strengths of VB.NET are also major drawbacks. The fact that it is object-oriented will greatly improve programmers' productivity. However, the world is full of programmers who use VB 6 - it is still the most popular language in the world. Those programmers are comfortable with VB 6 and its not-so-object-oriented environment and are proving very reluctant to switch to new object technologies that they will have to master before becoming productive.

Also, to implement completely the new .NET Framework, Microsoft has had to sacrifice backward compatibility. That means that you can't automatically convert an application from VB 6 to VB.NET. When you moved from VB 5 to VB 6, the conversion was painless. Everything that worked in VB 5 still worked in VB 6 plus some new, improved features that you could then decide to implement or not.

That's not the case anymore. To move an application from VB 6 to VB.NET you have to go through a conversion utility. The process will convert most of the VB 6 code but not all. In most cases you will have to manually convert 20% of the code. On a large project that can be a major undertaking!

"The Marketing Department at Microsoft probably calculated that if they were going to actually get people to move to VB.NET, they had to provide a conversion tool - if only to create the illusion that it was an easy, straightforward upgrade."

--- Dan Mabbutt ---

So, VB 6 remains, and will remain for a long time, the most popular programming environment. Millions of programmers have grown up with Visual Basic 6 and they've developed a fierce loyalty to the language. If you want confirmation of that, just tune-in to one of the many forums discussing Microsoft software and products.

There's no reason why you can't continue to use VB 6 for as long as you want to. Even on the new Windows (Vista, scheduled for 2007) Microsoft will offer some support for VB 6. You won't be able to get Tech Support and there won't be new Service Packs but the language will continue to work as well as it has for many years.

One of the only problems with using VB 6 is that you can't buy an official copy anymore. Microsoft doesn't sell new copies of the software. But there are other sources, such as Amazon and eBay where you can always find new or used copies of the software.

If you are new to VB 6 or you just want to improve our skills, get yourself some good tutorials, and a good textbook. You can now find the textbooks for VB 6 at Amazon for just a few dollars.

.NET :Solving the Multiple Inheritance Issue Under .NET Platform

.NET platform does not support multiple inheritance. Do not confuse multilevel inheritance with multiple inheritance. With multiple inheritance we can have a subclass that inherits from two classes at the same time.

Let’s suppose we have an application that has a class Customers and another class Vendors. If you wanted to combine these two classes into one CustomerVendor class it would be a combination of Customers and Vendors just like the diagram below.

Please copy the following URL into your browser to view the diagram: http://www.vbprofs.com/images/Article Images/ThomasArt1.gif

In the above diagram we see how the CustomerVendor class inherits from both of those classes.

Multiple inheritance is complex and can be dangerous. The advantages of code re-usage prevail over complexity is up to your choice.

Multiple inheritance is not supported by VB.NET or .Net platform. Instead of multiple inheritance we can use multiple interfaces to achieve similar effect to multiple inheritance.

In VB.NET all objects have a primary or native interface, which is composed of properties, events, methods or member variables declared using Public keyword.
Objects can implement also secondary interfaces by using Implement keyword.

Sometimes it is helpful for an object to have more than one interface, allowing us to interact with the object in different ways. Inheritance allow us to create subclasses that are a specialized case of the base class.

Example

Sometimes we have a group of objects that are not the similar, but we want to handle them the same manner. We want all the objects to act as if they are the same, even though they are different.

We can have some different objects in an application, such as customer, product, invoice etc. Each object would have a default interface appropriate to each individual object, and each of them is a different class. No natural inheritance is implied between these classes.
Let’s suppose we want to print a document for each type of object. In this case we’d like to make them all act as printable object.
To accomplish this we can define a generic interface that would enable generating a printed document.
By implementing a common interface we are able to write a routine that accepts any object that implements a printed document.

To conclude, by implementing multiple interfaces in VB.NET , we can achieve a similar effect to that of multiple inheritance.

My Choice Visual Basic

A number of years ago now I wanted to learn to program, I thought about it and managed to get a copy of Visual Basic 4, That was as you can imagine many years ago. Over the years i have followed through listened to other programmers talk of visual basic being the entry level language and not really professional.

This is as false as it comes, sure a few years ago visual basic had its place in business logic and i steered away from some technical programming, the obvious problems were that it was a bulky program when compiled. I have dabbled with C#, Cobol, and Delphi; However I believe strongly in being an expert in one language is better than being a jack of all trades in terms of learning other languages. Now days with Dot Net the line between Visual Basic and C# being radically different is a bit blurred.

Xtenda Communications now provides various applications written in Visual Basic, including VBA, VB6, VB.NET.

I am hoping to find the time to publish some of my works over the years, when i first started my applications used to seem to take forever to complete, its amazing how you as a programmer change over the years, you find easier ways to do things you get very frustrated when you spend weeks or months writing code to work around limitations then a new version is just released sorting out that limitation, and you sit back and thing i just did all that for nothing.

I hope to bring some new bits and pieces to my blog and i hope to see some people come back and even leave some comments.

Thanks

To Pay For Shopping Cart Software Or Use Free Alternatives

There is great opportunity on the internet for people to make money. The first thing you need to do is find a product to sell. This is the most important step. You need to find a product with low competition and high demand. You must also have a product that has a decent profit margin. You should not skimp on this step in order to become successful.

The next thing is to create your website. If you are not familiar with designing websites there are several options that come with automated software that will allow you to process all types of payments online. You will find two options after you begin your search. There are free programs and paid programs. Let me explain the difference between the two.

The free software like Oscommerce is designed from “open source” programmers like and they offer you a software platform that has no monthly fee or initial cost to begin using. It is important to know that in order for these programs to be successful there will be some work that needs to be done. You will have to have some basic programming skills. You need to know how to upload data to your server.

With open source programs you will find several program contributions that can help alter the capabilities of your store to become more search engine friendly, send emails to your customers and more.

You can spend a great deal of time altering your store to function exactly the way that you would prefer.

Paid software can be much easier to use but there are several options that you could choose. The two best in my opinion are Monster Commerce and Yahoo Stores. These two options have several different scaleable stores that you and your company can grow into using the additional functionality.

The final decision would be based on your budget. It can take some time to build up an online business especially if you are using a new URL that has no link history or age. This can make getting traffic from natural search results difficult. It may be worth your investment in time to try the open source software in the beginning to develop your store and move up to the more automated paid programs after you have developed a web presence and the company can pay for its own monthly charges rather than having to pay out of pocket costs.

I own an ecommerce store dedicated to serving the public as the best source for Tiffany lighting and stained glass info and products. Please contact me with any concerns or questions that you may have.

Freeware Software Site

Here is a brilliant site for all of you who are interested in more free software freewarehome seems to be a great place to find the application you are looking for it is well categorized and seems to be packed with free applications and gadgets.

One thing to be weary of though is that some software designers don't fully embrace the concept of open source, and market free downloads as shareware, this act is disingenuous and i personally delete any application that markets itself as free then has a catch. I don't mind limited functionality applications or even some shareware. Shareware is a great way for a development company to get their product out there and tested, its the lie of the lure of FREE that gets me.

So take some time there are plenty of applications on this site.

All things Free

I have not posted in a few days and i am really feeling it now, the urge to add more areas to the blog fro Free stuff. Actually this is not just free stuff but i hope useful toys, I don't mind having to pay for stuff as long as I don't feel ripped off. Over the past few years i have come across a few good tools that cab help I will start off with various web development tools.

The first one is not really a development tool but it is a great way to get started in creating your website. I'm sure most have heart about DotNetNuke
This platform or CMS is a great little tool for creating websites with all the modern features you could possibly want.

You will still need to know a few things about hosting and web design, you can choose from an array of layouts and styles. It integrates well into Visual Studio which will allow you to create new components and work with styling on the fly, or you can simply use the default components and produce your website based on a CMS type of framework.

There are various additional downloads of components from shopping carts to Blogs, All you need to do is register your product and download your Open Source package right away. you can choose from a binary install to a source packages and get documentation.

All you will need is a hosting company that can support Dot Net V2. Go for it. Try it its Free.

6 Ways To Increase your Adsense Revenue

How much revenue do you generate from Google Adsense?

Recently
there has been a lot of discussion about people who earn over $10,000 a
month just from Adsense. Furthermore, there are rumors of a few
individuals who earn over $1 million a year just from using the power
of Google advertisements.

So what is Google Adsense and how can you use this program to earn a six-figure income?

About two years ago, Google created this program to help websites to monetize their web-traffic.

Here's how it works:

Webmasters
obtain a special code from Google which then displays targeted ads on
their website. Whenever a visitor clicks on one of these ads, the
webmaster earns a commission. Unlike other online businesses, there is
no selling involved. All you need to do is get people to click on the
ads.

Although this is an excellent way to generate an income,
many websites are not effectively maximizing their Adsense potential.
As a result, they are leaving a lot of cash on the table.

The question is how can you increase your Adsense revenue without increasing the number of web visitors?

The
key to earning an income with Google Adsense is to have your ads match
the rest of the site, making them look like part of your content. Your
focus is to avoid having the Adsense blocks look like blatant
advertisements.

The following are six ways that you can do this and increase your revenue at the same time:

1) Find the right place-
Most website visitors read content that is in the middle of a webpage.
As a result, the best place to put your Adsense block is in the top
part of the page, at the beginning of your web content. You want to
weave the Google Ads into your web content to give the appearance that
they are extra links which expand on the information of the page.

2) Use the Large Rectangle-With
Google Adsense, you have the option of picking different ad formats.
Most of the time people opt to use the Leaderboard (728x90) or Wide
Skyscraper (160x600) style ads. Unfortunately, this is the wrong
choice, because both look like blatant advertisements. Instead smart
webmasters have found that using the Large Rectangle (336x280) yields
the best amount of click-thrus.

3) Ditch the border-
Many people experience a sharp increase in Adsense revenue when they
changing their border. What they change is very simple…they get rid of
the border on their Adsense blocks. This is another way to make the
advertisements look like useful web content.

4) Adapt the font-
Whenever you write content, it should be the same font size and style
as your Google Adsense block. This will help make it appear that the
advertisements are a natural part of your website.

5) Match the colors-
In addition to changing the fonts, you also should match the colors of
your website. For instance, if your content is written in black, and
your hyperlinks are blue, then the Adsense blocks should also be the
same color. Again, this helps the advertisements appear to be normal
web content.

6) Don't have too many distractions-
On a webpage, it is important to give web visitor a limited number of
options. By having too many links and graphics, the web visitor might
go to a section that doesn't help increase your profits. While it is
important to inform and entertain your web visitor, it is also vital
that you monetize your site. So if the main focus of your site is to
earn an income through Google Adsense, then get rid of all
non-essential links and graphics.

By taking the time to
implement these six simple steps, you'll see a dramatic increase in the
click-thru ratio of your ads. If added to all of the content of your
site, your Adsense income will skyrocket!

commission comes from the proceeds of the sale. You don’t even have to

2) You may not be
able to bear the pain of separating from your oldest possessions, but

Democracy Player

This little FREE Gem, has proven pretty useful for me, this video organizer come player allows you to subscribe to video RSS feeds, download video clips with ease. If you into the new fad of Youtube then this download is a must.

I liked the sleek vista type look, but more importantly for me was the easy video search, like all programmers we often need to turn to the net for help, instead of scratching our heads and getting rather abusive with our screens we tend to channel our frustration into forums, and little rubber bricks that we try throw at the nearest poor unsuspecting peon that happens to cross our paths, there are  a few other places that could hopefully help.

With the video search functions the possibility exists, to find video help, Thats why I give this application a thumbs up.

Open Source Software

This section of my blog is dedicated to Open source applications over the next few weeks I'll be adding lots of interesting links to various categories of open source software. I realize this may be duplication of services that already exist however I'm keen to keep as many interesting programs together.

In this first article lets introduce you to a brilliant application, Asterisk! Now I realize that this is not aimed at the general public and the software may require some specialist knowledge however there are a few distributions directed at the small business or home user.

Asterisk is the worlds most popular open source IP telephone system, that contains many features that would be expected from high costs proprietary business systems.  Asterisk  is completely free and works on Linux. AsteriskNOW is a lighter distribution that includes everything you will need to get your basic network setup.

Web Programming VB .Net

For a number of years now I have been designing web applications with ASP.NET with VB.Net. I have found that this is an easy transition from desktop application design to web application design, and in some ares a cross-over.

Using Vb.Net for web applications is very similar now to C#in web development and there a number of tools online that can help to convert C# code to VB code.  In this area of my blog id like to take a look at some Free Development Tools. We will start with the most important tool of all when programming using the DOT Platform and that is the FREE Visual Studio Web developer Express edition available for Free download, on the Microsoft website.
